Summary and Future Directions
Therapeutic angiogenesis holds great promise for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and complications of diabetes and other chronic conditions that affect the cardiovascular system. While mechanical treatments such as lasers and EECP can improve quality of life and prolong survival in some patients, the real promise lies in the development of advanced therapies, such as regenerative cell and gene therapies, that stimulate the body’s own production of angiogenesis-stimulating growth factors to promote healing in damaged heart tissue. The availability of such treatments is likely still several years away, but research is ongoing and should provide hope for patients with cardiovascular disease.
