Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. In 2010, heart disease will cost the United States $316.4 billion.1 This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity. Major risk factors for heart disease include high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes mellitus, tobacco use, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, and genetic predisposition.
