ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

HISTORY

In 1994, a group of physicians and scientists shared a vision that angiogenesis-based therapy could conquer the major diseases of our time. They established the Angiogenesis Foundation, and set out to make the vision of angiogenesis-based medicine reality.

The Angiogenesis Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization and research institution. For 15 years, the Angiogenesis Foundation has been and remains the world’s only organization dedicated exclusively to unlocking the mysteries and promise of angiogenesis. Its mission is to improve global health through angiogenesis-based medicine, diets, and lifestyle. Its goal is to help people lead healthier, longer lives by restoring balance to blood vessel growth. The Angiogenesis Foundation, as the leading voice in outreach and education focused on angiogenesis, prompted research paths that have generated some of the most effective cancer medications in our lifetime.

We have assisted more than 10,000 patients in over 30 countries find evidence-based angiogenesis treatments and clinical trials.  We are recognized as the world’s experts on scientific and clinical research within the field of angiogenesis, including drug and device developments. The Foundation is committed to helping people around the world benefit from the full promise of angiogenesis-based medicine to provide new hope and make life-, limb-, and vision-saving treatments available to everyone in need.

A Visionary’s Inspiration

Dr. Judah Folkman (1933–2008), the renowned Harvard surgeon, and founder and pioneer of the field of angiogenesis research, was one of the leading scientific figures of our time. His pioneering research on tumor angiogenesis, begun in the 1960s, revolutionized our modern understanding of cancer and paved the way for the development of life-prolonging cancer therapies in use today. His vision inspired the creation of the Angiogenesis Foundation as a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the new field of medical angiogenesis.

Dr. Folkman served as a faculty member for the Angiogenesis Foundation, delivering keynote addresses alongside Nobel Laureates. He referred patients and friends to the Foundation for consultation and provided continual guidance and encouragement to the organization. Dr. Folkman shared his insights into the challenges and opportunities he saw in the field; championed the Foundation’s mission to influential individuals and prospective donors; and donated books and manuscripts to our library. He publicly recognized the Foundation at major conferences before pre-eminent angiogenesis scientists and industry leaders. In 2003, the Angiogenesis Foundation honored Dr. Folkman with its Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award, presented to him by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Dr. Folkman had the good fortune to witness the field that he pioneered evolve into a major force in modern science and medicine. The Angiogenesis Foundation honors Dr. Folkman’s memory and work by continuing our commitment to advance the field that he established, and by helping to realize his vision of angiogenesis as a unifying concept in 21st Century medicine. Our annual conference of world leaders in angiogenesis bears his name.
